Susan Boyle, the Scottish singing sensation making headlines on every media today and the woman who shut up Simon Cowell on "Britain's Got Talent", has proved 2 things right I'll say:-
- "Cynical attitude and our modern society suck big time"
- "In the end, the Universe tends to unfold itself as it should"
I very well agree with the media that our so called "modern" degraded society is full of cynics today who judge people on their physical appearance or personality rather than their talents or abilities. Every god damn singing talent show on the planet end up giving physical appearance a priority when it's supposed to be a "Singing talent show" and not some "Next Top Singing Model" beauty contest.
Though I am not a hardcore follower of such talent shows, I do catch up with them occasionally and all I manage to see is some really really talented fella being knocked out of the show for some one who's less talented but with that "X" #$@%*@# factor. This is how cruel our modern society is, just can't help it. I am sure most of you must have seen the cynical crowd and Simon Cowell (i would love to wipe that sarcastic smile off Simon's face and knock him down cold in a ring if given a chance...I just hate him more than Anu Malik, another intelligent jerk who portrays himself as the Indian version of Simon Cowell) being smacked in that stunning Susan Boyle performance. Judging by her appearance and her origin (that she says she comes from a group of villages in the Scottish town of Blacksburg), any 'Big City' cynic would laugh her off when she said she aspires to be Elain Page and probably make a mockery of. Not until they were stunned to hear her voice and later give her a standing ovation and accept being the losers on the day.
Another similar case:-
A typical flamboyant cynical 'Metropolitan/Big City' guy (coached at the famous Bansal classes in Kota) and a typical village guy (who has trained for IIT-JEE at the less known Super 30 coaching institute) happen to meet each other at the IIT-JEE exam and have a conversation after the exam. The first thought that the 'Metropolitan' guy would have in his mind would be.."Oh., he is just another frog from a small pond, and he possibly couldn't even frame a sentence correctly in English the way he speaks with that accent...and what the hell does he even know about competition(grin)!!". While the introvert village guy is indeed overwhelmed by his flamboyance, he senses the need to work on skills he is lacking. These two meet again after some months, now at the prestigious IIT Bombay . Our flamboyant cynical guy who has managed to get a Chemical Engineering seat is indeed shocked to see the introvert (with an improved command over his English) in Computer Science and Engineering class with a higher IIT JEE ranking than him. Well you can figure the rest of the story now...
And coming to the second point, most of us know that Susan Boyle was an unemployed single woman aged 47 before she got the big break through the show. Fairly late huh...but better late than never. What if she had never even made an attempt considering her age, her appearance and other factors. Many of us tend to get dejected waiting for that big break, loosing patience in the end. She is a role model for people who crib about not getting everything early in life, be it money, fame, success etc. "Remember this, every dog has it's day"[my best friends fav comment :)] and "In the end, the Universe tends to unfold itself as it should" (heard this in some movie i don't remember)
I wish we all learn something from her..... really respect her for standing up against all odds and hope the Almighty (or whichever supreme power there is) gives her the courage and strength to climb all the echelons of success undeterred and handle it well,.. the way rapid success is taking a toll on her.

well....indeed some so called "talent" shows have promoted instances of discriminations based on looks and appearances....with simpletons being labelled as unskilled and some others, who happen to be more fortunate in the "appearances" department gain both the admiration and the good wishes of judges as well as the "aam junta"..ireespective of their talents..this is disgusting....
ReplyDeleteand something i find more disgusting is the manner in which people change after winning these shows- look at the winners of the talent shows in the recent past...they have been turned to hair-dyed, chain laden, pony-tailed and earring-ed wierdos by now....just to fit in the more glamorous world.....and in the process, losing their simplicity and their appeal as the "average guy" who had overcome the odds to achieve something......
Yes,this is what our 'civilized' and 'modern' society demands today ,even if the 'average guy' has to pay for it by sacrificing his own ideals or principles,let alone questioning his conscience time and again.It's hard to believe some can go to the extremes of silicone implants,liposuction,rhinoplasty and such facelifts to fit into the glamor world.A chunk of the 'aam junta' would rather prefer to see some flawless beautiful skin or a belly button being flaunted than some one who'd hide the flab under a saree or traditional attire.
ReplyDeleteIt's bitter to swallow the fact that such things have actually mainstreamed into the 'Real World' too.Just look at the number of ads in the news papers or other media spreading 'awareness' among the 'aam junta' about cheap medical facelifts or other procedures to look 'good and cool'.Call it 'Business Ethics' or 'Normative Ethics',people like us can only express our views or opinions.I and You can't change the mindsets of screwed up elements in this goddamn 'Cynical Society' for good on our own or else we run the risk of getting ourselves shunned or killed like 'Che Guevara' by 'federal agencies'[revolutionaries like him try to change things while fighting for a cause,but end up being victims of failed ideologies in the end]..It's disgusting to be a witness and do nothing about it.You either metamorphose as per demands of the society and end up following the crowd,or risk yourself trying to put your ideologies ahead.
